Default Wafty Size 24

Some of you may remember the Original Wafty - one of the most important flies of modern times - tied on an 18 with one feather and an extraordinary amount of skill.

Times have changed since then, particularly eating habits. No longer do Mr and Mrs Trout want to spoil their appetite for the evening rise with large mid-morning snacks, and no longer do the chalkstream trout want to be known as the Take-out Texans of the fish world.

So enter the Wafty24, a delicious new appetizer based on Pheasant, Mole and CDC, with a sauce of the finest Caramel Silk.

Tied with a nod to the techniques of Roy Christie (nylon loop) and biggoodtroutfisher (CDC in the nylon loop).

This is the bar where it will be served:

Very intricate work, nicely done. I have decided to leave the tiny flies alone until I find I absolutely need some - no good for my blood pressure!

There's a reason for the intricacy: for love nor money I can't get a normal hackle on a fly that size (and I have about four failures to prove it).

The mole thorax is part of the whip finish and covers any mess round the bend of the hook (and of course hides the whip).

And however hard I try, I always end up with head mess when the fly is tied the other way round. I think the pheasant rib is over-egging it a bit, but it makes me smile to tie something I can't really see..

And another thing.. the eye is so small I'd rather have nothing there on the off chance I'll actually be able to see to thread some mono though it.
