Question Starting from scratch, recommended basic techniques - DVD or book?

As the title says I am starting fly tying pretty much from scratch, are there any recommended books or DVDs that I can glean the basic techniques from? After that I'm sure that the step by step guides and other internet sources will give me plenty to go at.

Any suggestions?

Conrad

I got one when I was getting back into tying. Seems pretty good, it has a split format where the top half describes the patterns with the bottom half the technique. To clarify the pages are slit across the middle and ring bound so that you can turn to the techniques required whilst concentrating on the pattern. I have to say that it was mostly for reacquaintance with the techniques but I would recommend it.

The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying by Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer published by 'Frank Amato' www.amatobooks.com.

Granger's in London here just happened to have one in when I was doing my initial stock up of materials to tie my first few basic patterns.

Good luck btw, hope you enjoy yourself ^^

Thanks for the suggestions, I've had a look inside the one on Amazon and it does seem to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Fly Tying for beginers.
both by Peter Gathercole

Hey Conrad is it Fly Tying or Fly Fishing you need help with, if its fly tying then I have some books from basics to more advanced patterns you can borrow, if its fishing, then I'm afraid your on your own.
Give me a bell.
Catch you later

You won't regret buying Craven's book. If you master each of the exercises (each being a fly) in order then you will never find a fly you can't handle.

Books are good if you choose the right one but for me I made big strides forward as soon as I started to get videos and DVDs as you can see much better what even the best writer tries to convey with words.

In the past I have enjoyed videos/DVDs by Hywel Morgan, Bob Carnhill, Gary Borger and Oliver Edwards (more advanced) and would commend them to you as well as the many SBS on YouTube nowadays, some by members of this forum.

I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”
