Red face Wild brownie Damsel attempt ??

Hi Guys

After the sucess of my "Lite damsel" which was tied on a B175 size 10 with hot red head, and chartruse shell back, even taking a few wild browns. I fancy tying a slighlty smaller even more natural damsel on a size 12 hopefully making it even more exceptable to wild browns........... well came up with these ................ not sure they are "damsely" possible a "bit too skinny" but im very happy that they will take fish

Reckon i need to "bulk" it up a bit to to get a more damsel effect ?? What you guys think ??

You call this a damsel? I tie a very similar fly, but call it a hatching olive nypmh (Baetis sp.). But then again, what's in a name?
The important fact is that wild brownies indeed like it

What makes you think wild browns are fussier, Englander? To be honest, I think your effort at the top of the post will have the opposite effect... and be more acceptable to 'Bows and less to wild browns. I think the browns would prefer the bigger, bulkier 'lure' type damsel.

Love the MK2, any chance of the tying?

I've been working on some small s12 damsels with marabou tails (mix of olive and yellow), seals fur body and eyes made out of melted mono. Tried them out a couple of times on ressies without success, but I reckon it might still be a bit early for them on the bigger, colder ressies?

I have to agree with jindra, when he stated.."is that a Damsel"..now you might say that the fly I make maybe a cousin to yours..a more modernized one no less, ...I'll let you be the judge on that........

this fly has a pearl foil overcoat , over peacock herl [thorax], and fine black wire on it's abdomen, sizes #14-#18...........

I think you may have opened up a big debate there Rob
Do you think some flies are more attractive to one species than the other?
With wild brownies do you feel they dont like to flashy a fly or is the rainbow more tolerant of flash?
Dull and drab for brownies with the rainbows avoiding them in preferance for a brighter fly on the same cast?
Or indeed vise versa.
What is your take on this???

Hi Guys

Rob~ Good point ! i started my fly fishing 3 years back on winter stocked rainbows and got pretty goood at it When i moved to wilder loch with wild browns and stocked rainbows or escapee rainbows i struggled to catch the browns Although it has been said this may be due more to how im retreiving my flys rather than my flies ?? Personally i my mind i seem to put wild browns on a pedestal , dont know why ! Ive caught wild brown on my lite damsel but never on a goldhead fritz lure damsel ??

To be honest i was thinking about a post possible "sticky- resource" to help beginners or guys like me who move from stocked bows to wild browns ? i.e a list of fly patterns one should use to "Specifically target" ?? Rainbows will eat just about anything orange blobs, fag butts etc i always feel browns are more discerning ??? Views most welcome .....................

Mot ~ MKII Tying

B175 size 12

Thread: Olive

Tail : Olive cock hackle

Rib: gold wire

body: dubbed olive hare mask

Flash back: large mirage opal

Thorax: dubbed olive hare (more guard hairs)

If you like my MKII mate you will love my "Lite damsel" tied on B175 size 10 a proven killer rainbows and indeed wild browns too. Re cold......this pattern fished dropper took a few bows this winter never too cold for damsels. Here it is ..................

Maharg~ Ive covered this in my reply to Rob, a very good point im sure theres many new comers or guys who have been bought up on stocked rainbows as was i who are unsure of which patterns are best used to target specific species ..................................
