Ebay for me too

eBay My World - silvermag

herbert miner - similar prices (inc postage) to lakeland but in honey dun. I've never tried Whiting capes before - got a few metz #3 half's of varying quality

I've had a bit of a practise with the standard imperial, a parachute and a reverse (a la Roy Christie) version. I'll stick photos up later to see what you think. I must admit I like the reverse version, easy-ish to tie and when chucked into the sink, sits brilliantly in the surface.

Cool mate this is where I got mine. Its a saddle and should cover 12's to 16's. It cost me less than £19 inc p@p and should be below the import tax threshold.

When you import anything over $30 could be opened that itself has a £8 price tag on it then vat added if your item is say $35 inc postage then they would want the £8 for opening the package and the vat on £35 not $35. Ive imported regulary for 5 years now and had ordrs over $300 not looked at yet cheaper items hit by import taxes. Anything from cabelas and anything delivered by UPS all seem to get looked at whilst USPS seems a tad luckier.

Im glad you like roys reversed parachute emerger Ive been tying and using them since last season with good effect. Though Im still having trouble with the hackles either snapping of just not tightening properly.

Ok thanks for the info, will have to bear that in mind next time

some very nice looking capes in that link you gave - I might have to put one of their furnace saddles out of their misery. I've been looking for a nice one for ages

=========================

OK here are my first quick goes at several kinds of imperial. A bit rough, and still a bit wet from a sink-dunking. I'll practise a bit more before starting the swap flies and hopefully with my (hopefully not too expensive!!!) new honey dun cape

Parachute Imperial with ginger hackle

Out-of-focus standard (to me!!!) Kite's imperial with medium dun hackle

Reverse Imperial

sorry if I offend anyone with my butchery of a great fly pattern

Hi Guys

I got a fantastic roofed wing sedge pattern off 1973Dereks a wee while back that I will tie for the swap.

Nice to see work in progress above, I'll join in:

The 'Prototype'

I've done a number of variants over the last couple of days with white CDC instead of natural, Brown and Olive dubbings, flat wings / loops on top, rib wound in and not wound in etc.

I'm currently thinking a kind of monotone works best, as a simple and minimal fish catcher - concentrating on form rather than colours, as it's a busy little object without getting overly complex.

Even been on Youtube looking at emerging bugs, they all seem to leave a dark shell behind and come out a dull even colour, quickly airing their wings and going translucent. My head hurts thinking about the tying possibilities.

Need to get the head area a bit tidier yet, not sure about that bit that shoots up from head, either it's going to go or get better pronounced and might still resort to some colour? One to mull over, all part of the fun of fly swapping.

Could tie to preferred colours if required?

PS

Just looking at this again, gona have to minimalise that dubbing - anyone got a suggestion for natural looking dubbing that goes nice and tight without looking too busy or plastic?

looks a cracker mate!

I got a grey minky strip the other day and there was some loose underfur in the bag. I used it on some nice tight dry fly bodies. You could try rabbit underfur as well I suppose if you can't get mink

That's Muskrat at the mo', taken from plucking under the longer hairs on a patch, which is usually quite fine but I'm working from a new patch from Phil Holding; think rabbit is even coarser than Muskrat.

Mink sounds possible, although based here between Bristol and Gloucester there's a shortage of shops I can visit to see quality materials without driving to say Hereford, so a bit of a lottery choosing materials on the internet when after something quite particular.

May just work on getting the finer under fluff off the patch and using it more sparingly.

Will suss it in the next day or so, still plenty o' time yet, although I've had reports one set will be on the way on Monday or Tuesday already.
