Default Small flies, sparkly heads ?

Can anyone advise what the sparkly chenille / fritz type material which is used for the heads on smaller flies is ?

I'd post a picture of a fly in question to demonstrate but can't think of any which spring to mind.

Easiest example would be to say I wanted to tie a dabbler or zulu for example and put a bit of sparkle in the head without using beads.

An sbs using this type of material would be very handy as it would give details on finishing the fly.

That is the very thing, either dubbed or in a dubbing loop.

Thanks for the replies, I've ordered some more tying materials today but have some glister dubbing type gear in the box so will see what I can knock up.

Graham, I've never used the dubbing loop method so may give it a go tonight but would this not create too heavy a dub for smaller flies ?

Was thinking that maybe the technique was to split and spin the thread but never tried this either. Does anyone know if it can be done using all types of thread / silk or are there only certain types / makes which lend themselves to this method ?

Try both and see what suits you.

Thanks again lads, luckily I have some utc thread in the crate, here's a wee pic but I think I'll need to get some more of the finer utc 70 gauge stuff, either that or use me pens to colour the ones I already have.

Hope to maybe add some sparkle to flies the like of which are in the picture.

Cheers again,
