Default River Flies

I think i have been bullied into to doing this thread on flies i have used on river brown trout here in N.Ireland by a certain Mad member we all know...anyway i will start with 5 of the first ones i used and add more as i go along trying to keep with original materials.The first 5 are ones i used over 20yrs ago for many years without needing any others from March through to October, pretty basic stuff and all that was needed in my day.

Hook; size 16
Body; stripped ginger hackle stalk
Hackle; ginger

This next fly my pops called a blue dun was first i tied and was used more than any other fly in our boxes from the start of season till the end with few times if any without catching.

Blue Dun
Hook; size 16
Tail; long white cock hackle fibres
Body; grey thread/ house hold stuff for sewing
Hackle; blue dun or grey pigeon

This next one was my first variant to challenge pops blue dun fly, which it did quite often with me having rare victories over him.

Hook; sze 16

Body; pearsalls No 93

Thats my first rivers flies for brown trout and never used any others for a very long time, i did tye more as more materials came available and ill add them when i gather materials.

Greenwell,s spider

Aha i knew you would be along quickly my friend....yes pretty simple joni, not much need for flash in them days and i am sure they would still match a few of todays efferts if not better.

Nice old school look to the flies.
No flash, no foam, no CDC or other novelty mats, and still you had great time on the river...

Well, I am a newcomer to this forum, and it may be that I am missing something - but at first glance it looks to me as if Mr. G ties some pretty decent stuff ;-)

Yes is quit good tyer but he is very rigorus teacher He is never pleased with my tyings and tryings with some kinds of wet flies they use on Irelands lakes

Yes jindra when pops brought me into fly fishing rivers all we needed was some thread and hackles, memories of some quite enjoyable fishing are coming back looking at hese patterns and making me want to get back to rivers to see if the success i had then on them can still be had today.

Hi joni.....well we are having quite a little jouney here and if you cant keep up i will kick you into touch...just kidding mate...some of the wet flies i have shown you i have tied as dries and now i feel i will share what i am doing because you push me so hard. In this thread i will show which ones i have used for lakes that have also caught for me in rivers with a little change

I much enjoj "journey" around here ,thanks to you and some more of my new friends.
I learned a lott about lakes and flies for still water and you have to "kick " me untill i do that flies right,,,,,,but,beware,rivers are my batllefield

Feel free to add your river patterns joni as this thread is called river flies....i am sure we have similer tyings to tempt the fish.....be warned though i am an older married man....let the battle begin.
