And for your and mine river brown trout a coachman or greenwells spider pattern is good.

Hook; size 16
Body; copper or lead wire for weight/peacock herl over
Hackle; red game
Wing; white mallard slips

Body; cream or yellow waxed thread
Rib; fine gold wire
Hackle; furnace hen

This is good...Coachman (and royal coachman) are realy good at my rivers

Then we always had an orange and grey or brown partridge spider.

Ok joni on river all you need is some lots of hackle on size 12 hook and it float all day and fish love it.

But definitly not gray
here is one very old that suits your description ...old and allready eaten...........claret and black hackle........
