Default Vice advice

I have recently started tying again and brought a Danvice. The problem with this particular vice is the lack of room behind the head (esp when you have fat fingers like me). I have seen the extension piece for this vice and was wondering if any members have used the danvice with the head extension and if so a) Did it sort the problem out and b) where can I purchase the extension from.

The second part of this question is should I upgrade to another vice and if so which would you recommend in the £100 to £150 price group (Anvil Atlas or Apex are 2 that I've looked at).

Carl

for speed and ease of use, quality and no problems i would highly recommend the weaver scottie, no hassle and takes any hook size, ive used size 2 to size 24, will set you back £60 - £70 approx and will last you years and years! ive tied thousands on mine and its like new, they are spring lever type and idiot proof!

see here - weaver

Anvil make cracking scissors but i do not like the vices, small and fiddly and no good if you have fingers like a 1lb of sausages (me)

No doubt you will get folk recommending other vices that do this n that but i dont see the point, a solid hook hold and ease of use is the main thing you want imo, how many folk buy the fancy fully rotating vices and use all the features ? not alot i bet

This subject comes up very often, so PLEASE use the search facility at the top of the page. I've nothing against J.W's vices, in fact I designed the original jaw set for the basic vice.

However you can get a Dyna-King for around the money you're quoting, you'll NEVER regret it.

Thank you for the replies, I'm not a fan of the weaver type vice (I had that sort before) and I've found that the rotary function of the danvice is helpful. I guest I'll just keep looking until one takes my fancy.

Dont confuse the weaver scottie with the other cheap spring lever vices you get, totally different ball game

Best bet is to go to a shop and have a look and play with some vices, some expensive ones are just fiddly and cheap looking and some cheap ones are great value, if you do have fingers like a 1b of sausages you will have problems with some vices (anvil for starters) loads of folk buy blind or through a reccomendation from someone and regret it, always try before you buy!!
