Thanks for the comments everyone – I know it’s a bit (very) nerdy, and I know I’m only taking photo’s of a few flies but it didn’t cost a great deal and I think it could work pretty well.

The commercially available ones are silly money. I’m not saying that mine, lashed together from a few 2nd hand LED’s and a bit of plastic is the same but check this out

You can get a good Sage for that!!! I’ll try the argument with the domestic accountant that I’ve effectively just saved £600, so I might as well use the money saved to get a TCX, you never know

Stevekale, I did originally think about ‘zoning’ the LED’s with independent control for each zone, but I didn’t have all the bits. Maybe mark 2!

Silversedge, It’s only the plastic bit that is remotely difficult to make, but luckily I have access to kit for rapid prototyping 3 dimensional models. I’ve seen ring-lights on the web made out of card. Apart from that it’s some LED’s salvaged from a magnet LED light (£2.00 from an upmarket pound shop) a battery holder and a few resistors (pennies from Maplin) and some wire. Anyone could make one for less than £10.

Cheers - Steve

I'm just stunned you can make something like that. I'm stunned I can tie a fly for that matter. My DIY skills consist of reaching for the telephone!

And that's not even a good one, albeit it has a stupid UK price.
