Its not pretty but I bet it will catch fish. My suspender buzzers are no better but they still work. Too many people spent time flying pretty flies when scruffy messes work just as well. Its not about looking good to us. The fish cant tell the diffence. Keep at it, the satifaction of catching a trout on a home tied fly is imense

Default scruffy flies

I know the feeling about them there scruffy flies.
I tie lovely little black gnats for the river, my mate ties a scruffy variant and they out catch the neat one, i tried to tie em his way but they just dont look the same. Now he ties all my gnats as scruffy as they come but deadly.
Just thought i would share
Denis

No need to be gentle, this little guy will do the business. Scruffiness is a virtue in emerger flies - all the straggly hairs add movement, and to the ever hungry Mr. Trout suggest a living creature struggling to get through the surface film and failing in the process = i.e. his lunch

I sort of like white or pink foam post better, for no other reason that I can actually see where my fly is - but if many people think this way trout tend to get educated and black might be a wiser choice, as Mr. g bigtrout suggests

This is how I tie them:
