Default Making dubbing !?

I am about 3,000 miles from the nearest shop so I often have to make do. I presently have a requirement to use 'golden olive" dubbing.

I have (dyed) olive rabbits fur and can get hold of yellow / gold wool, I also have some yellow hackles...so the question is - could I chop up the wool and maybe even the hackles - chuck it in the blender - and add bits until I get the colour I want - maybe even add a few hare guard hairs if I want it 'spikey'?

How many of you 'make do' with what you have got when it comes to dubbing ?

Exclamation

Its easier to buy dubbing, however given your predicament, search out carpets of that colour (samples, swatches) and scrape off what you need...assuming you have carpet retailers close enough

Despite having in well excess of 800 different dubbings, I often "mix & match" if I can't find exactly what I'm after & yes I still buy dubbing's quite a lot.

Here's a good link on the SBS forum for Hare's Mask but you need a Dubbing Rake for this (or something similar)..

http://www.flyforums.co.uk/fly-tying...ares-mask.html

(also check the index pinned at the top of that forum, there's some great stuff on there)

I actually take hair for dubbing off a skin by making a short clip of the fibres right down at the roots and then teasing it out with my fingers and thumb. You do want the fibres to have some length so that they will curl around your thread if using a direct dub technique or sit in the thread if using a spinner etc.

You might need to experiment with this a little to make sure that you get the right texture and colour of course but it's not too difficult with a little practice. Note, you only need to crop out a little at a time if using something like Hare or Musk Rat.

For your purposes I would just try the Olive Rabbit's fur on it's own first of all to check out the results.

If you wanted to use the wool at some point to mix with some sparkle or something then you can also rake out fibres with your finger nails to do this.

Use an old hack saw blade to scrape the hare mask, other than this i can't say any more about making your own dubbing
