Default What is this wing style known as and is it even practical for fishing?

The mayfly is a classical extended body project, often tied with a bunch of deer hair. This fly features a tube body instead. (picture) - Mayfly - Mayfly - Global FlyFisher

This link shows a very artistic wing style on a Mayfly, I can see that the wing seems to be made of a split hackle curved and drawing the barbs in to form a solid wing formation so it looks possibly tricky but reproducable.

Is there a name for this kind of wing? I never saw this technique before.

Is it a practical wing to fish with? It looks like it might be pretty fragile and best reserved for display tying.

Looks like a variation on the wonderwing style, I think?

Yeah, I can see (after googling that) where that comes from. It's the business of splitting the quill that looks like it might make it pretty fragile that spooks me.

Yeah, that comes up with the same wing on a few patterns.

What's your opinion then, a fisher or a display piece?

Actually, don't bother to answer that , I can see that the opinion is that it is a surprisingly sturdy wing.

I found this tutorial (from none other than Wally Lutz himself) so I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction

The Wallywing Method
