Default Matuka / Ace of Spades Feathers

What capes are the best for Matuka feathers ?

Are the cheaper Indian hen capes any good or do you have to go down the line of expensive genetic capes and if so can cheaper patches be bought ?

I'm looking for four colours

Olive Green
Black
Fiery Brown / Autumn Brown ?
Golden Olive

But don't want to break the bank. Any advice appreciated.

Don.

Just cheap hen capes. You need the spoon shaped feathers at the top of a cape to create the Ace of Spades shape with the tail. Not just called the Ace of Spades because its black

Agreed - I've found cheap hen the best. I've got a really cheap black dyed hen (£3.50 I think it cost me) which, for Ace of Spades, is definately better than the much more expensive genetic natural black hen I've got. It gives a thicker, more solid profile.

Before you dismiss Genetics out of hand have a look at the Hebert Whiting hen breasts and saddles. They have lovely spade shaped feathers and a very dense web.
Also good for this type of fly are the Whiting black laced hen capes dyes in various colours.

Cheers
