Default CDC Spiders

Anyone tried these ? CDC hackle insteas of partridge, snipe etc. On dry fly hooks. A bit fiddle with the CDC but clever concept. Came across them on an old aticle in FF+FT last night.....

I think i used these on Stillwater without success ( "normal " spiders were lethal though ) , but has anyone tried them on rivers?

Good ?

Yes with very limited success.

I recently spoke to someone with donkeys years fishing spiders who like everyone else reckoned CDC ought to work. After many many hours of testing his conclusion was that they matched spiders tied with game hackles quite well when they landed initially on the water but once they went subsurface they didn't work at all as well as those tied with game hackles.

It later became clear to him why. His conclusions were that game hackles have an inbuilt flex or elasticity which causes the fibres to try to return to their original position after being acted on.

CDC fibres are poor in this regard.

I am yet to be convinced that CDC offers any real advantage over other materials for subsurface use.

Interesting Otter, and trust you to be at the cutting edge ....have to say they did nowt for me in Annamoe in Wickla, but they seem like a clever idea because CDC vibrates a bit underwater ....i might try a few anyway as i have a couple tied already....pm on its way to you ....

I haven't used CDC as a hackle.

But have used cdc off cuts in black as dubbing which seemed to work fairly well.

2-3 strands of partridge for the tail one turn of the same for the hackle fairly short in fibre and black cdc dubbing body with a gold rid.

Tied on a size 14 kamasan buzzer hook.
