There are a few things about this fly. Firstly it has a very tricky name. Secondly it needs forty-seven-and-a-half fingers to tie. A hands-free telephone would be quite handy too.
Firstly, though, you need to hang yourself upside down from the ceiling. I tried for an hour to tie hackles in as a tail. Eventually, out came the trusty pheasant tail.
Be careful with the nylon loop: everything gets caught in it, or doesn't: whichever is the more irritating tends to happen.
I also used Hare's ear because the cat was outside trying to track down some Albatross CDC for me.
One of the great things about this fly is the various bits of help I've received from members of the forum, particularly biggoodtroutfisher, who got me through the sense of hopelessness and desperation that comes after two hours of fannying around with hackle fibres.
I'd also like to thank the people who made me de-barb my living larva hook and helped me get over the shame and Phil at Fly Tying Boutique, without materials from whom I might have spent a relaxing day polishing my fingernails.
Can I also thank Phil for being as good as his word and sending me a free sample of splittable black thread. I've tried and have now managed to split the lot. Horizontally with a sharp axe.
And Phil, if you're reading this, I still can't for the life of me remember why I ordered that CDC..
