There are a few things about this fly. Firstly it has a very tricky name. Secondly it needs forty-seven-and-a-half fingers to tie. A hands-free telephone would be quite handy too.

Firstly, though, you need to hang yourself upside down from the ceiling. I tried for an hour to tie hackles in as a tail. Eventually, out came the trusty pheasant tail.

Be careful with the nylon loop: everything gets caught in it, or doesn't: whichever is the more irritating tends to happen.

I also used Hare's ear because the cat was outside trying to track down some Albatross CDC for me.

One of the great things about this fly is the various bits of help I've received from members of the forum, particularly biggoodtroutfisher, who got me through the sense of hopelessness and desperation that comes after two hours of fannying around with hackle fibres.

I'd also like to thank the people who made me de-barb my living larva hook and helped me get over the shame and Phil at Fly Tying Boutique, without materials from whom I might have spent a relaxing day polishing my fingernails.

Can I also thank Phil for being as good as his word and sending me a free sample of splittable black thread. I've tried and have now managed to split the lot. Horizontally with a sharp axe.

And Phil, if you're reading this, I still can't for the life of me remember why I ordered that CDC..

Do you know what? You can take a running jump up my.. :-)

Um, where was I? I'm not sure that I ever want to tie one again. I didn't give you a blow-by-blow account of the first one either (which I've just finished stripping down).

However, I do have some size 24 hooks lying around and it would be rude not to tie a few more.

You should really tie flies in sixes to get the pattern right (which begs the question of why hooks seem to come in packets of 25) so I may have a go at a few more on a size 16..

Thanks for all the comments though! :-)

For a first attempt that is an excellent fly
After the first few it is easy.

Marmalade,

Superb looking fly!

If you do not want that CDC you ordered, you can always return it to me if you have not used any...

Glad you like the free spool of black thread - and did you find the thread splitting tool I sent you with my compliments any use?

Kind regards

Phil: you're not having my CDC! It's just that I'm sure I had a particular plan in mind and I've forgotten what it was.. I shall think of something - it's excellent CDC.

The split cane splitting tool you sent to me splits some of the thread some of the time. I shall keep at it :-)

yoR - thanks for the comments. Do you do any easy flies? I'm actually in need of a small (size 16) browny red sedge.. :-)
