Default Woolly ******

Am thinking of tying a few of these to use when i finally get my 9ft 5wt rod. And the tying season has been extended due to the cold! Dont want to make them too heavy, or big. Have been tying a few years, but no idea on this stuff, so need advice, cheers

- What size hook is best
- Ideal bead weight ( tungsten)
- Re Hackle, are Capes too stiff in the bard - should i use saddles?
- Is chenille needed ?
- Finally, what colours are most popular.

All opinions gratefully received.

As big as you can get away with.
Yes or some lead wire under the dressing
Indian or Chinese capes to give a nice taper to the body hackle
???? Whatever floats your boat. Not sure on this one.
Drab
I assume you are going to use these on rivers???

Someones got the same thinking as me, i've gradually been building up a streamer flybox for this coming season and woolly ******s feature highly.

Sizes should range from say 4 to 10 2x longshank streamer hook although nothing is stopping you from going bigger or smaller.

Weight wise I would tie some with just beads and some with beads and lead wire so all eventualities are covered, if you need to get down deep you can and if its shallow water you've got some that won't snag up too quickly. Normal or tungsten beads would be fine all depends on preferences and weight required.

As maharg says chinese cock capes would work well as would saddle hackles, just ensure theres plenty of webby to aid movement.

Chenille is the body so pretty essential.

Colours; I would go for various olive shades, black, brown, white, rust also features and you could use grizzly marabou.

Hope this helps.
