Default Mapping Compass.

For those of you in your forties, I want you to cast your mind back to your early school days. The days when satchels were the norm and Duffle coats were trendy. Now think about the items one probably had in the satchel. Do you remember the tin with the compass set? In it you would have had a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a rubber, a pencel sharpner and a few pencils. Also you would have had a drawing compass and lastly a mapping compass. The mapping compass was that double pointed, levered thingy that you used to scratch your name under the lid of your desk. You know; the wooden desk with the empty ink well?

Anyway, it is one of those simple children's mapping compasses that I am after. I suspect H&S have done away with them as acceptable in schools, but I have a fly tying use for which the modern ones are not suitable. I reckon that they could be very useful for measuring out feather slips of the exact same width for winging. I can also see them being useful for checking proportions, use as a dubbing needle and as a varnish applicator. Plus I can scratch my name on my fly tying desk, although that is not going to go down well with Mrs Goose, as it currently doubles as the dining room table.

Anyone know where I might get one? I'm all Googled out.

P.S - I shold probably patent this before Petitjean gets hold of it.

Pennine Drawing Office Supplies - 552 02 Compass

Micrometer and vernier gauges can be had for not very much money at all on ebay ?.
Granted, not as suitable as a dubbing needle.

No, needs to have two needle points rather than a needle point and a pencil lead. I'll take a look at the gauges though.

Been there, done that. The problem is that they are not in general use in schools anymore.
