Top ones are okay and should catch fish, your nymphs require to be a bit slimmer in the body and i would try to get a bit more of a carrot shape to the body, very good effort you know the old saying "practice makes perfect"

HUH ??? What ??? I am only just out of the traps myself and am in no way qualified to "give pointers"

Although I will add that the top flies would benefit from having a nice palmer hackle IM(unqualified)O .

When you do your next batch of winged wets, try using a smaller thread size as it will help reduce the bulkiness that several of the heads show. Ideally both the wing & the hackle should both come from the back of the head, rather than having turns of thread behind one or both.

With the nymphs, try & tie the body herl on by the tips. That will get you a natural taper rather than the reverse taper you have here.

Hi Folks.

Thanks all for your comments, I will get there one day.

I was using uni 8/0 thread, I have some micro thread that I will tie the next one's with and try to keep the wing & the hackle both at the back of the head.

The nymphs. well they were just seeing how it would come out if I tied it backwards, tying in at the bend. ( needless to say not tying anymore that way ).

Thanks again folks.

Regards.

Uni 8/0 is fine for #12's, it may be a matter of using less turns & not concentrating them to much in one place. In other words, make every turn count. Try to produce slim smooth shaped heads, that don't crowd the eye. It takes practice & everyone gets this wrong now & again, but this is the way to go. Careful & close trimming of the materials is another thing to be aware of, don't trim them so close that they'll fall out as soon as the fly gets wet but try & avoid having excess material showing near the eye.
