Default Can anyone help?

Hello there

I'm Grant from Edinburgh, just stumbled across this amazing looking forum and thought i would introduce my wee self with a question...
Through the summer you will find me roaming the rivers and some still waters that surround Edinburgh catching the odd brown trout and grayling. I'm 29 and been fly fishing most of my life.
For Christmas santa got me a rotary vice thinking it would be a good present since i've not tied a fly since i was 15. So, over the past couple of months its turned into a obsession, i love the idea of tying patterns of my own using odd materials like my ginger cat. One things for sure, santa deffo regrets ever buying me that vice, lol
Anyway back to my question. This is the first rotary vice i've used and cant figure out what the tool attached to the vice is used for. I've noticed all rotary vices have them. It comes out under the vice and has a hook on the end, same shape as the end of a whip finish tool.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks, Grant

Hi Grant,

What you've described sounds like the bobbin cradle. You rest your boiibin holder over the hook, so the tthread's in line with the hook shank while you rotate the vice. This prevents adding unwanted turns of thread onto the hookshank.

Hope this helps !!

Kevin

sounds like its just to hang your bobbin off to keep it out the way and under tension without spinning etc?
