Default Want to get back into tying...

I used to tie my own flies years ago, and want to get back into it.

I still have all the hardware i need, but my materials are long gone.

Can anyone recomend a good place to purchase a kit which would include some of the basics in trerms of materials and threads, or maybe another way to get back into it?

I dont want to make lures, natural immitations preferably. Buzzers, hares eyes, olives etc etc

Help!

Be careful with some of those kits. A lot of the time they are for beginners, are poor quality and are full of stuff you don't need - especially if you aren't tying lures.

I would suggest putting a list together of the stuff you need for nymphs etc (not very much!) and shop around to get good prices and decent quality stuff. You can get stuff in bulk which is a good investment if you are tying long term. Pack of 10 tying threads in different colours, seals fur box in different colours etc etc. Ebay can be good but you can never guarantee the quality. This is what I use for nymphs & buzzers: Maybe people can add stuff I miss/forget?

Hooks:
Size 10, 12, 14 standard trout
Size 10, 12, 14 buzzer

Thread:
Black,
Red,
Olive.

Hackles:
Black,
Natural cock
Olive,

Body materials:
Seals fur (box of assorted colours)
Hare's ear mask - natural
Hare's ear - dyed black
Pheasant tail
Peacock herl
Maybe some floss for bodies, but I use thick tying thread
White antron/wool for buzzer 'breathers'
Orange floss/antron for hot spots on buzzers
As above in green

Rib:
oval silver wire
oval gold wire
flat silver tinsel
flat gold tinsel
holographic red
holographic silver

Some gold heads and lead wire. Maybe some olive marabou for damsels etc.

With that lot I reckon I would survive a whole season of nymph tying. GRHEs, buzzers in different colours, crunchers, diawl bachs, bloodworms, stick fly, pheasant tails, any variety of goldhead nymph etc. You can even do reservoir style dries - hoppers, shipmans, suspenders (get some foam for these) bobs bits etc etc. Hope this helps...

EDIT: Superglue and varnish!!!

There has been quite a lot posted about "kits" recently, perhaps it might be worth your while using the search facility at the top of the page.

Just an addition to st7's list of Goose Biots of all different colours for your Buzzers and Nymphs. Good Luck.
