A wee cracker Jim. Reminds me of a pattern from years ago called the Purple Helmet. It was an all cock job though. Christened so by one of the Hardy nutters, a Mr. Lee. Phillips. Did very well on Sweethope when we fished against the Alnwick lads.

Not a million miles away from the Fiery Claret Bumble either. Not sure about that copper butt.

Looks a spot on wee fly Jim.
Ive been messing about with claret lately, but i can never decide what rib to use, ie silver or gold.?
It wont make any difference i suppose, but i have noticed most of the older claret patterns seem to have a silver rib.?
Do you have a preference on what rib you use in claret flies?

Cheers Thorfinn

Thorfinn,

I generally prefer gold ribs on claret patterns. However, claret is a poor light colour and silver is better than gold in poor light. Interesting one.

Of the two, I'd say gold seems to suit claret better than silver does but for my tastes I reckon copper looks better than both of them. As far as catching fish goes,I honestly could not say if one colour is better than the other. I guess silver provides a stronger contrast against a dark bodied fly so, there will be situations where this will either help or hinder us.....difficult to measure.
