Default Hook size conversion.

Hi folks,

Reading through one of Tom Stewart's old books which I think dates back to the sixties. Great wee book, full of classic patterns which are still in use today. The book gives preferred sizes for the various patterns included therein and tells the reader that these sizes, (10 to 14 are commonly used) are in "old numbers" but does not give any sort of conversion to new or current sizes.
Can anyone out there enlighten me ?

Many thanks

Jim

Hi Rannoch

It's the 'old' or Redditch scale that is current. The 'new' or Pennel scale is largely discontinued - a shame really.
I quite enjoy reading 1930s books refering to size '00' flies - say roughly #15 current scale.

Hi Baz, very handy little chart which will indeed be very useful but alas does not convert the "old numbers " mentioned by the good Mr Stewart to the modern 12's,and 10,s and the like.

Ephemerela, I hear what your saying but still not clear to me as I don't have any knowledge of either system you spoeak of. could you clarify by telling me what an old 14,12, 10 are in current sizes or are you saying that the numbers quoted by the author are now those currently in use?

Yes - they would be exactly the same sizes.
