Default Quill Bodied Deer Hair Emerger

This is a variant of the (Wyatt's) Deer Hair Emerger that I first saw tied by Denis Shaw.

This version is tied with slightly different materials from Denis's version and has so far proved to be a great fly on it's day...

Click the image to open in full size.

The dressing is...

Hook - Fulling Mill Grub sz14
Thread - UTC 70 and UNI 8/0
Body - Stripped Natural Ginger Cock
Thorax 1 - Red Glister
Wing - Natual Deer Hair
Thorax 2 - Natural Squirral and ginger glister (well mixed)

all the best

Great looking fly. Its given me an idea!
One quick question please Derek. Do you varnish the quill body to protect the longevity of the fly or do you think the protruding segmentation adds to its effectiveness.
I must admit to having recently started varnishing my thread bodied drys just for the shiny effect, no idea if it will work .....

Hi Buzz

I feel on this fly the varnished body cuts through the surface film much easier where it can hang and it can then be supported by the wing and thorax to imitate the hatching fly as I imagine Bob Wyatt intended, even though this version is quite different from his original dressing.

But there's a lot of opinion when it comes to this type of body, and I always feel, it it looks right to you then stick with it.

all the best

Nice Fly Derek, but just one question, the body looks alot like a stripped peacock quill from the eye of the feather, giving that segmented look, how did you acheive this with the stripped ginger quill, did you squeez it flat?

Cheers
