There is nothing to stop you from using such threads, however,it is bulkier has minimal breaking strength and is generally c**p.UTC is the way to go,or if your budget is'nt up to that then Uni in 6/0 or 8/0.

Utc has been said but for a beginner I dont think it is the best especially if you are dubbing as it is very slippy.
Uni threads are fine and depending on the size of flies you intend to tie would be a good starting point , imo I wouldnt go any thicker than 8/0.
The threads I mainly use are wisp and sheer from Phil at the fly tying boutique.

I've been tying for about 3 weeks now, I started off with Uni thread and anything from the wife's sowing box but have now switched to Steve Parton's thread. It's about £15 for 10 reels from Ebay, so £1.50 a reel, it is fine, strong and does the job for me.

Yes i would say go with uni thread get black and white in both 6/0 and 8/0 use the black for your darker coloured tying and white for your light coloured tying then as you progress then you can start buying your coloured threads.
