Red face starting tying flies

i've finally got round to tying flies after putting it off for about two years. the main reason was because the whip finish tool. i couldn't do it then, and i can't do it now. i've just learnt how to do half hitches by hand so i'm ready for it now. i think

i've got a basic kit, half of which i don't know what it's for. anyway what i'm looking for is some begginers sbs and videos of simple flies to tie. i mainly fish rivers so these are the patterns i'm looking for.

if you don't have any useful links or sbs, then just a list of easy essential river flies would do. thanks and wish me well

Why don't you try here on the step by step section http://www.flyforums.co.uk/fly-tying...ing-lists.html
If you scroll to the bottom you can find step by step techiques the 2nd page also has dry fly patterns

Have a look at this:

The Classics to date

Then look on youtube for a video of the fly you want to tie.

This is another useful site:

Welcome to the joyful world of having an ever increasing taxidermy section in a box - toolbox - cabinet - spare room - shed - garage - purpose built annex - second home - tanning business.

I am no expert myself but regardless of what type of fishing you do it would be best to start out with some basic flies that can be fished in all manner of water types just so you get a grasp of the basic techniques which you can then tune to your needs.

Steve_C runs a tying evening class up here so it might be worth checking with the local library for evening classes in schools or colleges as going through a SBS without knowing what it is on about or which feather type of the best how to cut something to give a specific shape can be tricky to say the least. Better to have someon there that can show you and then tell you you're sh!t, I mean provide constructive feedback (sorry Steve it just slipped out) and correct your technique a little.

This has a few for you I think:

WalesOnline - Sports - Angling - Angling: Cardiff fly fishermen victims of the cold snap at Cwm Hedd

They are a great laugh and you will meet some fishing buddies to arrange days out etc.
