Question Dyes.

I am thinking of having a dabble at dying some materials. I did this many years ago and had some really good results using Veniards dyes, however, my dying activities had to be curtailed when I inadvertantly dyed some of Mrs Goose's kitchen fixtures and fittings a lovely, but unappreciated shade of claret.

My question is, are Veniard's dyes still the way to go or are there better dyes out there?

Veniard dyes are good. Jacquard acid dyes are superb.

But try this place as well. Scuddlebutt3.

Veniards are fine but avoid the claret and the black. The claret is too purple and the black isn't strong enough. For black use Jacquard, for claret use Veniard crimson and add a little Veniard ginger or fiery brown. Most everything else is ok. I have to say thought that by and large I mainly use Jacquard dyes these days as the colours tend to have a better uptake than Veniards. I've not used Steve Parton's dyes but if he's put his name to it the chances are that it's good stuff.

Alex, a friend of mine who used to do a lot of dyeing was very keen on Steve Parton's dyes. He spent quite a while on the phone to Steve talking about dyeing etc & gleaned loads of useful info from him. Very unfortunately Paul, who was also a superb fly dresser & fisher passed away at the age of 50, in 2003.

Gander I would say Veniard's dyes are probably the best bet for amateur dying. There are better dyes used for industry but they are also a lot stronger and require much more care. I use Veniards dye for about half of my dying.
