As someone who started tying early last year most of where I gleaned my early tuition is still fresh in my mind.

Firstly...DON'T BE TEMPTED TO BUY A STARTER KIT!!! most of them use really inferior materials and you will only end up getting frustrated.

Purchase a cheap vice (its only got to hold the hook) your better off spending the money you save on the vice for getting a good quality full ceramic bobbin holder. I use the Veniards one which I am very impressed with, also get a decent pair of scissors...you can find some good cheap ones but they must be sharp and have a very fine point.

Then decide which flies you would like to tie and buy material for those to start with, in time as you tie more and more different flies you will inevitably build up your stock of materials.

The internet is a great resource for fly tying tutorials and the one I found invaluable when starting was The Gwent Angling Society website. Mark Roberts on there has create some excellent video lessons and puts them across really well.

Good luck and I hope you find it as enjoyable as I do.

Sabsman.

Just a note to follow on from sabsman's excellent post. I don't know where you are, but check The FDG to see if there's a branch near you.
