Can someone tell me why the Duck Fly is.....

called the Duck fly?

I kinda think I should know really!

All sorts of reasons ,
but the best ive heard is that the pupa emerges into a fly form at the same time the ducks have their young and the young feed on the emerging flies,

so came the name , the duck fly

If you see a big buzzer hatch.you'll see the ducks, coots, gulls, all feeding like crazy on them.

Apparantly the ducks go quackers for them bum bum.

I expect he was winding me up (He usually is)

But my Grandfather said that they are called Duck Fly as Duck fly Commence hatching in large numbers in early April when the weather is as the saying goes Nice for Ducks.
