I know it is not very traditional but it is deadly for wild broonies and I have had some superb sport on Leven, Harray and most lochs inbetween with this. I was introduced to it in 1994 by inventor and Leven regular and Scottish internationalist the late Jim Newlands who passed away in 1997 and who was founder of Ruthvenflyfishers. When I think back at his fly boxes it is only now I realise how ahead of the game he was.
The fly in question is a DUNCAT and as the name suggests is a cross between a Dunkeld and a Black Cat.
DUNCAT
HOOK: Kamasan B270 double size 12
THREAD: UNI 8/0 Red
TAIL: Black Marabou with 2 strands of orange Crystal Hair over
BODY: Flat gold tinsel (LUREFLASH if poss), the dark goldie stuff
RIB: Fine gold wire
BODY HACKLE: Hot Orange Cock palmered
WING: Black Marabou with bronze mallard on top and two strands of orange Crystal hair on top of that.
THROAT HACKLE: Blue Jay
CHEEKS: Jungle Cock
This has got me out of quite a few scrapes and is deadly when fished sub-surface for Wild Brownies. Works best on a double fished on the point. A superb pattern more than worthy of a place in your box for the coming season.
Cheers
Gerry
