Default Klink question

When tying the hackle to the post a lot of the tyings I've found use Spiderweb thread but do not give an explination as to why I need to change from the thread I use on the body.

Any suggestions??

Personally I don't change the tread, I've never found a need to.I use a 8/0 tread for most of my tying.

I think you'd only use the Spiderweb on micro pattern (>= size 18). I don't bother changing thread either as I haven't gone that small yet...

Personal preference I suppose.
However, I whip finish with my main thread on the head, then change to spider web for the hackle because I personally create, IMO, a neater fly. I, also whip finish the spider web by hand, as I catch fewer hackle barbs that way.

Try both and do what works best for you.

Black Uni thread 8/0 will favour all your dry fly patterns. Wax it and spin the thread if you go really small. Never heard of changing threads while tying klinks = /

Spider web is used so that when you whip finish under the hackle, the build up of thread doesn't upset the hackle and skew them off the horiontal. It's not just for tiny flies. It's strength is pretty low though

I know some excellent tyers who change thread to SW to finish around the post. I personally do not and find that 14/0 Sheer (or Syntons) works fine.

I do not agree that 8/0 works for tying whip finishing around the post on small flies with a good, level parachute hackle.

Spinning thread is great, but whip finishing with a heavily-wound up thread is asking for trouble as you finish the fly: the thread can furl and cause a knot and / or break your thread.

Take a look here too: http://www.riverflybox.co.uk/parachute%20emerger.html It may be of some use...

Just my thoughts...

Once youve gotten used to spiderweb youd be surpirised how easy it is to use - I tie the full fly using it, mainly because it 'dissapears' into the hackle etc - I cant see the point of using two threads if you can get away with the one.
