Default Boar Bristles

I was speaking to a chap today who farms wild boar.

I asked him what he did with the pelts and he stated that the majority are scraped at the slaughterhouse but a few each year are kept to tan or whatever he doe swith them.

The long and short of it is, he stated that he would be willing to sell the bristles off of the boars.

What I would like to know as he was asking is

1./ Would the bristles be better sold as patches or as packets
2./ How much do they normally cost as either of the above
3./ How many are in a packet/or size of patch
4./ What are the prefered colours

Interested to know as he seemed quite interested in selling them on and I wanted to know what the market would be like for them.

Colours would be natural at first but if enough demand they could be dyed at a later date.

Cheers

David

Hi David

I use them every now and again for salmon flies, pot belly pigs etc.

I buy patches approximately 3inch x 3inch. I pay around £6 to £7 per patch (dyed). There is enough bristle to tye hundreds of flies off the one patch. The length of the bristle is around 3 to 4 inch long.

I prefer the patches to packets of bristle as i use the wool for dubbing.

The colours i prefer are Red, Black, Natural, Orange, Purple, Yellow.

Hope this helps

Alan

I buy mine frm Cookshill ,normally at the game fair so i can see what i am getting ,mainly get purples ,but i have some superb yellows from steve !
I dont see it as a huge market !
however there are many other uses ,a good bristle broom is great for many jobs and they are bio degadable unlike plastics.

Peccary is compressable ,and much less stiff and fatter than bristle .

I bought some last year from this guy via ebay: eBay Seller: rafal15 10-11: Sporting Goods items on eBay.co.uk

As you can see, he sells quite good sized patches, and it works out a great deal cheaper than buying the bristles 50 at a time in cellophane packets, which is how I've had them previously.
