Have you tried spinning smallish bunches on a bare shank?
A lot of fly tying demos I've seen have shown deer hair spinning on shanks covered with pre-waxed thread. Talk about the hard way of doing it!
Even Peter Gathercole does it the hard way in the
fly-tying bible when dressing the muddler. I always start the silk well down from the eye with a muddler, leaving the first 2/5 of the shank bare.
My advice is leave as much of the shank bare as possible, use smallish bunches & once spun with 2 or 3 loose loops, take several turns
through the hair & once it has started spinning push back to compact the fibres ready for the next bunch.
My muddlers, G&H sedges & so on have never fallen apart, so this way must be fine.
