Default G & H Sedge..........be gentle !

Hi Guys

I must confess to not really fishing dry flies ..... i hope to change this in 2010 to this end ive started tying up a dry box.

I like the idea of foam and deer hair simple, natural buoyancy less faffing about with floatants etc

Here my first two Sedges......didnt bother with antenna. The left one has a double hackle the right a single ??

Not a lot wrong there mate.
Great either worked back or static with a wee nymph hanging underneath.

Very nice Englander, not the easiest of flies to tie.

Have to agree, this can be an awkward fly to do correctly but you have done it justice

Nice tie

Have you tried spinning smallish bunches on a bare shank?
A lot of fly tying demos I've seen have shown deer hair spinning on shanks covered with pre-waxed thread. Talk about the hard way of doing it!
Even Peter Gathercole does it the hard way in the fly-tying bible when dressing the muddler. I always start the silk well down from the eye with a muddler, leaving the first 2/5 of the shank bare.
My advice is leave as much of the shank bare as possible, use smallish bunches & once spun with 2 or 3 loose loops, take several turns through the hair & once it has started spinning push back to compact the fibres ready for the next bunch.
My muddlers, G&H sedges & so on have never fallen apart, so this way must be fine.

You beat me to it Steve.

That is excellent advice.

I love fishing dry flies and one of my best performers has been the sedge fly. (or as the Americans call it the Caddis Fly).

Strangly enough I have never had much success with the G&H Sedge, however I have caught many trout, including some big ones on the Walker dressing. This pattern is easy to tie and you MUST put the little butt of fluorescent orange floss or wool on it. Without this it doesn't seem to catch so many fish.

What you do is skate this fly by pulling it through the ripple creating a fair wake.

And prepare for extremey aggressive takes.
