Horses,I tried the Mustad R50,after reading Paul Proctors articles in Trout and Salmon, they seem fine. Also used B175 in size 16 to try and get them a bit deeper, they also work fine.
Cheers Kev.

Thanks for the replies,i am reading a book at the moment "Wet fly tying and fishing" by Roger Fogg a great read so far and he tells you what flies and how to fish them, spiders mainly and he also advocates the use of spiders on reservoirs [always thought spiders were for use on rivers, your never to old to learn] with great effect so i am going to tie a load ready for next season.for the hooks all he said was use a fine wire hook and that is why i asked which hooks you use when tying your spiders.

Have you seen any on sale recently? I bought a couple of years ago after reading that same article, but seem to remember having a bit of a job finding them even then.

Depends on what you want to achieve. I need to tie all of mine on barbless hooks and I use a choice of three: Tiemco 103BL, Grip (i think it is a 11101BL0 and the Partridge Flashpoint SLD which I prefer.

Just remember that these flies are at their most effective when they are fished in the surface as that is what they were designed for. So lighter is better and the B175 is a little on the heavy side.

Your,e right Bruce. Memory lapse. I have a poor picture:

of a fly taken a couple of years ago.
No too different to Grip. What I like about these is the wider gape.
