Default Detached body problem

Hi, I am trying to tie a detached body for a mayfly, I am tying it on the needle using elk hair, When I have finished it looks great, Then I can't get the thing off. I tried to tie another one not so tight and could not get that one off either, Any idea's.

It's difficult to answer without seeing what you are doing.
Few things to try -
Make sure the needle is clean and tapered down whole length.
Try using less thread wraps and try to avoid wraps bare onto needle.
try to get the fat end moving, then wriggle it off.

Another thing to remember when removing a detached body from the needle is to push it off from the butt end of the needle, don't try pulling it from the tail end. Sorry If I'm 'teaching granny to suck eggs'

Paul,

What thread are you using? Most will grip the needle as it their life depends on it.

In my opinion, the best to use is GSP - gel spun polyester - slippery to get started but the bodies will slip off the needle perfectly.

The easiest to work with is Roman Moser Powersilk - if you wish to email me your full address and I will send you a spool with my compliments.

If you like it, you know where to come to get some more!

Kind regards

Hi there I use a Norvise with a needle to spin up some detached bodied flys using dubbing, I then use a water based head cement to give them some strength, I then slide them off the needle and put a slight curve into the shape.
What I am saying the water based head cement might aid in the removal of the body by lubricating the needle, give it a try.
Martin....

I think that is not good way to hit the beginer in fly tying with some super fly directly at his head...first flies must be very slopy and no good...but in time....
here is some old ones,I hope you like them

One suggestion is not to use elk hair. Frankly a much better job can be done with either (a) foam or (b) a long fibre dubbing like Superfine wound over clear silicone. With the former you'll get better segmentation and great floatation.
