You can pull the hackle through the pages of a heavy book, or hold the hackel tight wet your fingers and stroke the fibers back just before you wrap it into the fly.

There are several methods you can use, but always fold the shiny sides inwards as that's the way the feather naturally curves.

Doubles the hackles fibers and requires less turns when tying the fly. More flies per feather.

First ignore the above posts.

If you want to double your hackle for a palmered fly, grip the hackle with a hackle pliers on the tip and another on the stalk. If your right handed, place the hackle pliers on the stalk in the palm of your right hand - hold them with the second, third and fourth fingers. Hold the other pliers in your left hand.

With the index finger and thumb of the right hand stoke the hackle fibres so that the best side is on the outside i.e. with the shiny side outside.

OB
