Default The Classics: Teal, Blue and Silver

Teal, Blue and Silver.
Another fly from the mists of time. Part of a series of flies using teal breast feather for the wing.
Others include,
teal and green,
teal and red,(peter ross)
teal and black.

Many people would concider this more of a sea trout pattern, I like it on the point of a cast of 3 fished quite quickly for the brownies.

  • Hook wet fly sizes 12-8
  • Tail Golden pheasant tippets
  • Body Silver tinsel
  • Rib Silver wire
  • Hackle light blue cock
  • Wing teal breast either as slips or rolled
  • Thread Black

A variant made famous by Hugh Faulkus, and a killer of many a sea trout,
The Medicine,

  • Hook low water salmon in various sizes
  • Body and rib as original
  • Hackle as original
  • wing as original
  • Thread red
Tied in a slim, short style this is a first pick for many sea trout anglers.

Another variation I have used it this tanden.
Please excuse its bedraggled state as it has been involved in a tussle or two with Clyde eastuary sea trout!

  • Hooks 2 size eights linked with 20lb nylon
  • Bodies silver nail varnish
  • wing blue cock hackle points
  • over wing 2 or 3 strands of silver/pearl tinsel and peacock herl

Another variant

How have you found this pattern?
Any variants of your own that have worked well?

All the best, Graham

Very nice, I also use the teal, blue and silver for brownies, caught a few decent ones on it last year, although not hooked a sea trout yet .

Maharg, if you're having problems tying teal wings give me a shout and I'll help.

Two points:
1) I think you are using widgeon rather than teal. Widgeon is often sold as teal so I am assuming this is what is happening here. Widgeon is brown and white, teal is black and white.
2) I think the pattern is called Teal, Blue & Silver.

Big Brother is watching!

Yes, I've only ever heard it referred to as Teal, Blue and Silver.

Thanks Stan, wings are not good. Happy that Big Brother is watching. The only way to get better it to take up constructive critisism and learn from others.
Would you like slips or rolled?
Will redo when I get some decent teal.
Afraid what I have was a little bit ****.
T.S.B, T.B.S.???
What ever floats your boat, dont think you would get the wrong fly if you asked for either.

Title changed guys

Yes Graham fix the heading m8.

The teal blue and silver still highly rated over here for sea-trout and Dollaghan

What a fantastic guy. Posts a few threads, having tied some flies, rolls into a bit of stick and takes it on the chin and comes out wanting to correct. I am impressed maharg. Well done you. I have a lot to learn and am humbled.
