Default FF&FT Feb

Interesting letters section, Oliver Edwards seems to have provoked an interesting caddis debate.

Yes, and Terry Cousin sent in a photograph.

The undersize BWO debate continues... should last another two issues at least.

He was very verbal on the caddis subject at BFFI.

I spoke to Stu about this and he thinks the backlash could last a while - they've challenged the chalkstream gurus you see......

Personally, I think Patterson talks a load of ***** and I was glad to see him corrected by a couple of guys who genuinely know what they are talking about.....and I'm from Lancashire!!

They did have a proper "go" at Goddard, Patterson et al, almost 1/3 of the article in fact, but then I reckon stirring the debate is what they wanted eh? Gets it out on the table so to speak.

PS VERY nice Ballon Caddis Matt....I'll be having a go at that one.!

It was nice to meet a fly tying "hero" ( !) of mine at the bffi ....Ollie is a sound, funny man and expounded at length about those comments from Patterson. Steve - we may have been beside each other when he was talking about it.

Either way I also agree that Petterson talks a lot of old sh1te.

I think half his flies are bonkers too.

It'll be awhile before I get my hands on the issue, any chance of a run down?

Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

I agree. Poorly tied tat. Goddard's aren't much better....unless you like unsightly, fat bodies on your dries and nymphs with no abdominal taper. But then I don't suppose it matters to half tame chalk stream stockies.

from the side lines:: Paterson has been making up some strange flies in ff&ft based on the underwater behaviour of certain caddis or there habits and the trouts desire for them in this stage of they're demise. And seems to be coming up every month with anew exclusive piece of expert info on caddis to justify his fly pattern of the month. whereas Goddard likes to quote the old wives tail that certain caddis dive bomb the river from a great hieght to penetrate the surface and lay eggs.
Crofts and Edwards have basically questioned with photographic evidence and testimony from caddis experts from all over europe, that the two of them are talking B8llocks. And at the flytying fair Oliver Edwards let it be known to Patterson that he was talking bollacks and question his motives in public ( as is beffiting a Yorkshireman).

I have a collection of 1970's trout at my feet . they are full of arguments and counters with regards to the words of walker, clarke, bucknall etc , It was great real discussion instead of the toadying and politeness in the mags now.
I think Crofts and Edwards are a breath of fresh air in this , and they know their stuff and FF&FT is getting interesting now!

I am also Lancastrian and find it strange to rally behind a pair of tykes!

Thanks, the last issue I have has Pattersons lead wing pupa. Was it Goddard or Edwards who had an article a while back with a bead head pup (think it was based on Fontaines studies)? It was suppsoed to be based on the egg laying stage of the female.
I've found Pattersons articles to be not as good as older ones. I've seen some of Oliver Edwards stuff on youtube, very good and he comes a cross as osmeone you'd learn alot from. Pity he's left handed as it's a pain trying to watch him tie.
