Default What is the Square knot anybody?

When tying my crab patterns many USA books and sites recommend tying the rubber legs with a square knot as this is the only knot that keeps the legs horizontal.
For my bonefish and Permit patterns this knot would be very useful.
Cannot find a description of it so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gotcha.

Square knot is an Americanism - we call it the Reef Knot.

Gotcha,

Here is literally the first entry on Google when asking for "square knot":

How to Tie a Square Knot Properly | eHow.com

Not too difficult to find!

Kind regards

Thanks guys, believe it or not I have been using a reef knot on some of my larger sized hooks 2's and 1's.

For the smaller sizes 8's I simply use tying thread because there are less fingers and thumbs in the way and with my tying style obtain a neater finish.

The confusion came about because an angler I met in the Bahamas told me it was not a reef knot but a totally different knot.

In the UK many of us call the uni-knot a grinner knot and have seen our blood knots called by another name in other countrys.

Maybe someone out there should make translation books on knots and tackle.

Thanks again.

Just like Total Fly Fishing using a different name for Lefty's Loop in the current addition of the magazine...
