Hi you can either use plastazote block or a booby tube cut squarly, or lfft round if you like.( if leaving round make sure you round of the edges if you know what I mean.)

Basicaly I tie the tread on and tie the booby tube on top on the hook and whip the tread down the shank. When you have done this you should have two pieces of foam pertruding from both ends. Then add a couple of thread turns under the back piece of foam. Tie your fly normally then and make a small neat head which should raise the foam.

Hope this helps and make sense.

John.

Tie the foam along the full length of the shank leaving a few mill. protruding each end. then tie in your rib and body.

Scratch wrote a super post within a thread about 18 months ago which is well worth reading.

This is another one "missing" from the SBS lists. Maharg did a post "the Classics" - would be nice if this could be a sticky with links to the finished article for each. I mailed admin but I'm not sure what's involved. Things get a bit buried and hard to find. For a new fly-tyer like me its a bit frustrating.

In the end I made up my Shipman's using Seals Fur substitute, Tinsel and lengths of polypropylene yarn teased out at the end for breathers. I am comforted that they look like some of the ones in the picture by Scratch. I can do scruffy, tying wise. Would a foam body not make them sit too high in the water?
