Default Welsh Twist.

I have just been delving through some boxes of old materials in my attic attic. Half a hank of what I believe to be the original Mosaic turned up - It has very fine black filaments in it, so does that sound right.

Anyway, the other thing that caught my eye was a small Lureflash packet labelled "Welsh Twist - John Ifor fly". The material is a braid of different coloured tinsels, but if I remember correctly, they had to be in a very definate proportion to get the best out of the fly.

I have a vague recollection of this fly, but was wondering if anyone has the full pattern details and is anyone still using the fly?

Paul
I have the 4 page article from FF&FT from 1997 which shows in detail how to twist the lurex, want a copy of it let me know.
The dressing is described as the following;

The John Ifor fly is easily made of twisted lurex strands, plus a mixture of coch-y-bonddu and brown partridge hackle fibres and a starling wing (bottom).
The variant with bronze mallard wing and jungle cock eye(top) excels as a point fly.
Here is images from the article.

Thanks Gerry,
I've got the FF&FT from that year, so I'll look it up. It is the one with the Mallard wing that I remember. Does it work for the Browns?

This is the fly that gwilym hughes brought to us via his friend john ifor and can vouch for its pedigree, not only does it work on browns but bows also it has taken a lot of fish for me at lake vyrnwy and on tal y llyn. its very versatile on a team of wets and have used it middle dropper and on a size 12 double on the point. ignore it at your peril

Tight lines

Looking at it, it may make an interesting tail on some patterns, if unravelled.

I was lucky enough to see Gwilym Hughes make some of this stuff at our local FDG a little while before the FF&FT article. It was a right palaver, and then lureflash brought out their version. The original came with a long an interesting story in true Gwilym Hughes style. I believe that the home made stuff is a lot finer and creates less bulk than the stuff made by Lureflash, but as I said it was a fair amount of work to make it.

I think I have a packet somewhere, I bet it might make an interesting under body on Dabblers, maybe ever a good body on a zonker / minkie.

Cheers

Andy

I'll take the risk... and ignore it thanks! That's the minginest fly I ever saw, and no mistake! Reminds me of that Scoobie gear all the kids were fettling about with a few years ago.
