Default Playing with caddis pupa pattern

Winter time is fly tying time and right now I am playing with a couple of new patterns for the comming season. This one is meant as a slow sinking caddis puppa nymf when those big ones are hatching.

Hook: Partridge 15BNX just because I love the shape Smiley
Threas: Sheer 14/0 white, coloured black with a marker at the head
Body: Dubbed underbody with Deer creek supa suede wrapped over, coloured with dark brown marker at the edges
Legs: Whiting bird fur
Thorax: Brown ostrich herls
Thorax cover and wing buds: burned medallion sheet

You can easily add layers of weighting to it in the under body if you like.

Nice Ulf! I've been working on something broadly similar myself. I like the look of the medallion sheeting - I'll have to try and fnd some of that!

Tremendously lifelike, especially the body segmentation.

Pat at Flytek sells a variety of colours of medallion sheeting.

Thanks Jonathan. Sometimes the things you need are closest to home! It's about time I paid him a visit - he only lives five minutes away!

Tell him I sent you and I might get a bit of commision out of it! i see Pat every monday of the month at the longridge FDG and it costs me a fortune buying little bits and pieces but its a good honest quality service that deserves supporting.

I got a packet of brown and dark dun last year. I tried the brown as a crinkled emerging wing on a glass bead sedge pupa looked good but didnt catch tho on the time i tried it in a grannom hatch! I got the dark dun for use as a crippled wing but never got round to experimenting just kept using the old faithful flies to catch. I've a newborn due in 4 weeks so think I will be doing a spot of experimental fly tying whilst I cant get to the early season river.

Nice one! You might know one of my fellow club members John Milne who I think attends that occasionally? Pat is a gent - it's always a pleasure to pop round and see him and relieve him of a few materials....and I'll forever be in his debt as he went a long way to helping me gain admission to YFFC. One of the most enthusiastic fishermen I know!

ATB,
M

John Milne doesnt ring a bell. I'm somewhat glad that the guild only runs from oct to march as it gives me time to save up again!

I got some foam of pat by larva lace and i think it will work a treat on this pattern as it absorbs water and is a lovely cream colour.

I'll have to figure out how to post pictures up so i can post some photos of my tyings.

Jonathan
