this one is using CCT Hair, gives quite a nice shape but its hard to tie in the head due to the material being very hard at the core, has anyone got any tips to make it easier to tie

Chris,

try soaking the fritz before you tie it in.

Sweep back before you make the next tight turn, everytime.

Also some fritzs out there are difficult to work with as they are (or appear to be) twisted. Softer fritzs will be easier to work with

One of the best fritzs to use IMHO is the Vampire plush range fro Celtic Fly Craft

Hope that helps mate

Buy an Unboosted Fritz ( ie one that has no nylon fibre additive ) - mind you most of the folks selling the stuff haven't actually got a clue what that means !

Pure translucent with no added nylon fibre lays down better and looks better. It is what I use personally - I seem to supply most all the small time dealers with Boosted - which apparently sells better .

Regards

Send Sam a PM (flyfishing-uk). He'll sort you out with some excellent blob fritz. I was having the same problem as you and couldn't get the profile I was after until I tried Sam's stuff.

Fill a cup full of water mate, have it to hand when you begin tying. Dip yer old fingers in it and drench the strip of fritz you have tied in at the hook bend .
Hold the fritz at the hook bend with your right forefinger and thumb and with your left forefinger and thumb role the frizt fibres away from your right hand.
If you soak the fritz enough you'll see the fibres go easily were you want them to go. Begin to wind your fritz on tight, pulling the fibres backwards on each turn. I don't bother with thread heads, i just superglue off .
