Default Heather Fly

I am a newbe fly tyer but was inspired to have a go by Scratch's misplaced (!) thread.

Tried a foam detached body Bibio Pomonae...First, rubbish, second, tried red nail varnish on the legs, rubbish. Third, red dubbing under the thorax...okey but not 'red enough'. This try, red dubbing overthe body / thorax joint, plus, red dubbing to build up the thorax ....feels as though I am almost there.

Tied on a size 16 barbless grub hook.

Memo to self...tidy up the end of that body !!!!!! LOL.

I had an interesting experience with Heather fly on Leven last year.

I came upon a pile of feeding fish on Heather fly at Vain Dyke. I has some foam bodied patterns and tied a couple on. They were little crackers and looked very much like the real thing. I got a couple of offers but no takes.

I thought "Sod it!" and tied on some simple heather hoppers with seal's fur bodies and nailed a few straight away, before the 'fall' came to an end.

I often wonder how well I would have done if I'd fished hoppers from the start when the fish were going daft.

Lesson learnt.

Stan, I remember those ultra natural looking little heather fly patterns that you showed me at Leven . The one thing about them that wasn't in line with the natural was the splayed attitude of the wings. As you know, the natural always has its wings tucked away in line with its body both when it is at rest or dead.
I wonder if that contributed to the fish turning up their noses at it.....just a thought.

Thanks chaps,

Loads of good stuff there. Now it's back to the drawing board...once I get hold of some: Dyed orange goose feathers, sparkle wing sheet, black nail varnish etc, etc, Sheesh.... (LOL)
