Default Maraboohoo from CELTIC FLYCRAFT

Hi all just a quick warning if your thinking of ordering MARABOU from the above company. This was my first order from them and fancied some DARK OLIVE for my DAMSELS .What i saw when i opened the pkt was hard to believe There were 20 + plumes in a pkt 3" WIDE and god knows what lenght it was. Anyway if your looking to tie some CORMORANTS or other tiny pattern you might find amongst the CRUSHED + SHORT SHORT plumes best of luck. Honestly its beyond belief and im hopping mad.2 pkts aswellGot to smile or ill cry. It wont put me off the company as everything else was fine but MARABOOHOO bware

Why don't you ring Jon & at least give him the chance to try & sort it for you rather than take this route first ? After all, he didn't harvest it or dye it or packet it. & yes there are several different types of marabou.

Hi.

Since I returned to tying about 18 months ago I have used Celtic Flycraft almost exclusively and have found them to be absolutely excellent, however nobody gets everything perfect.

If you have a few seconds; would you mind terribly expanding on what the different types of marabou are??

Many thanks

Ben

Okay, the soft feather generally referred to as marabou are actually now taken from the breasts of turkeys, not marabou storks the original feather. They are, like chicken feather graduated in size along the birds breast, with the shortest coming from the area around its legs. These are often referred to as blood plumes or bloods. They are generally around 3 to 4" long & have longer fine pointed tips than most other feathers on the bird. Personally they are my favourite type for general use. The longer & "frothier" feathers that are more often seen i.e. Veniards etc have thicker stalks & are around 6" long. These are much more popular as that's what the market has been mass marketed with & is used to. Other types include "Woolly Bugg3R" marabou, which is shorter again than a blood plume & only the tip is really of any use to tiers over here.

Chickabou is not a turkey feather like the above but is the soft feather taken from the outside edges of a genetic saddle. Barred marabou is often silk screen or other dyed for effect. Mottled marabou is taken from a brown/black turkey with natural markings. Normal marabou, is taken from "whites" & is often bleached to enable it to look very white & take dye better.

Most of the feathers we see today come from the U.S. & are often repackaged/ dyed over here, with Wapsi being one of the largest suppliers.

I bought some from them, ok the packet was small, but it didnt affect the marabou. Would use them again.
