Default Two Finger Whip Finish

I hesitate to Google this as i fear where it may take me, but can anyone point me in the direction of a little video clip that will show me this as I always seem to break the thread pulling it through. Alan

Do you mean this..........

There are schools of thought that say the whip finishing tool is better for accuracy.

Hope that helps.

Hi Oakedge,

If you are breaking the thread when pulling through then I would suggest that one of your turns has slipped off, over the eye of the hook, forming a granny or overhand knot that then creates the resistance and friction that ultimately causes the breakage.

As John says. Also, spin the bobbin to release the twists built up in the thread during tying prior to the whip. Pulling a tightly twisted thread tight during the whip finish can also cause a break.

I have used the two finger whip finish for years and would agree with what has been said. However having watched Davie McPhail using the tool, I embarked on learning how to use it. I am slow, but have all the time in the world.
I do believe that the tool does give a neater finish than using the fingers. And I feel that I have accomplished something else.
Good luck
(I find the Sportfish tool the easiest to use)

I learned to do it by hand many years ago after watching Jackie Wakeford in action. When I began tying semi-professionally the ability to do a 5 turn whip finish by hand in the time it takes to pick up the WF tool was an invaluable aide. It probably made 2 flies an hour difference overall. Which is the more precise and accurate? I doubt there is anything more than fractions of a millimetre in it. The trout won't care, but if it's that important to you then who am I to argue?

Doing it by hand is much more satisfying!!

Exactly John. That's what I do. I didn't tie for 20 years and when I did resume tying last year I didn't even have to remember that because after 20 years I hadn't forgotten it. Don't do it and knots and breakages will happen.
