Default Picric Olive.

Hi all,

A wee cheeky number for all seasons. This wee fly is usually a main point fly for me at any time of the year.Early season it works well for Hoglouse and shrimp,(not so good during buzzers), then picks up again for the olives, mayfly, sedge and as you would expect in the deeps for the daphinia.

Tail:Crest
Butt:globrite number 5
rib:gold wire
body:golden olive aurora dub
hackle:Picric hackle and Picric blue jay
Wing: Picric Bronze mallard.
Cheeks:J.C.

Cheers,
Saracen

looks good - a little like a back to front cock robin. Obviously a confidence fly for you, and as such, invaluable. Is that primrose thread you have used?

Hi Ian,

Yes mate I always like using primrose for yellow flies, that way darker thread doesn't dull the body when wet.

Thanks,
Saracen

Cheers - As an Irish lough angler (presumed) - I am wondering whether, as well as the usual array of sooty's used during olives, you might have the exact dressing for a much much paler fly known as the Burghley (burley spp???) that I have used on Corrib before??? Trouble is I never tied this particular fly for myself. As far as I can recall, it was like a very pale greenwells type fly with a slight yellowy tinge to it. Maybe a long shot, but if you know the dressing for this fly, it would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Ian

That's the jasper!!!! Should have known you would have the dressing to hand. Do you think primrose would do??? Maybe thats why I remember it looking like a greenwells but paler ie unwaxed primrose?????

Used to fish the River Tay - an old hand at the game gave me a pattern he called "Yellow Legs" - Basically a wet spider - size 10 -12.
Body - Light olive dubbing.
Rib - Gold Wire
Spider Hackle - Yellow Badger diied in Picric Acid. - Tied to slope back.
Silk - Yellow or primrose
Head - Finished in Red or Fire Orange silk.
This old guy fished it every time he was on the Tay/Tummel - early season - April - He rarely blanked with this pattern.
Some of you good tyers might like to have a go and post a photo.
