Default "The" Cul de Canard

Do any of you tie the above pattern ? Malcolm Greenhalgh did it on one of his DVDs .....supposed to be a brilliant dun pattern , although a bit more awkward than it looks. CDC body ( in olive) and CDC wing.

Has anyone tried it - or is it no better than a normal F Fly ?

I've seen him tie it "Live" recently and it's slightly different from the "normal" F fly. He used a longer CDC plume for the body (wrapped around the shank from opposite hook barb), then tied in a few CDC for the wing, followed by bringing the "body" feather round to form a more bulbous head, which he reckoned was the key difference with his pattern. - I have his book too but not at my side at the mo.
since I'm s'posed to be putting the kids to bed

That's nice, but not the one he tied that I saw. I have a pic I took on my phone (blurry) but may be a while before I can post it.

Sorry mate, not the fly i'm looking for ......

that bulbous head mentioned by the man who should be putting his kid to bed is awkward ( even if i only told an ultra fast bed time story tonight ....the season cometh .....)

Also, how many plumes should be used for size 14 ( i used about 5 thinnish plumes ) and 16 ?

As i understand it , its an emerger pattern not a dun, its got its bum firmly under the surface.

You keep asking if one pattern is "better" than another, IMO they can both work wonders in their day, some days F flies kill others the Cul will attract more fish, who knows!

As for the number of plumes, i use enough to make them float which can vary from 2 for a size 14 to 5 depending on the quality of the feather.

Cheers Buzz, you'll be glad to know that another similar request has just gone up !
