maybe the loop is a bit big? anyhow when you compare them with my first efforts in 5 flies i feel there has been an evolution

Very good! I like it. I'd like to hear Dave's view on the length of the loop. To my mind, all you need is enough room to trap a decent air bubble. Ultimately you're trying to also simulate a half-opened wing, so I would even go a fraction smaller.

This is on a size 20 Varivas V2300.

Wow Nice work and to my mind definite progress. The first one gets my vote here: I think you've got the proportions and size absolutely spot on. It's just about fine tuning really and even the smallest of alterations can make a huge difference to the overall effect.

Both flies you have tied are very fishable

With regards the size of the bubble, I would suggest that the first is better, However, I have every confidence in changing the size of the loop dependent upon the water I am faced with. It may sound fiddly, but infact, just a few tied with different sized loops can be very useful.

Faster water calls for a larger loop (and possible an extra plume of CDC):

A slightly smaller loop will still float well and helps the fly to sit a little deeper in the surface film - therefore ideal for smoother, glassy glides:

Tie a few up and give them a swim next season - they work well as they give a super footprint.

I sometimes tie a few woodduck fibres of add some Zelon behind the loop to add to the 'emerging wing' imitation.

One other thing... you may find turkey biots longer and more pliable than goose... and that may help you even more acheiving the effect you require.

Cheers,

Thought I'd give it a go - my first ever attempt at one.

Tryed to follow Dave's pattern but didn't have most of the ingredients so improvised almost everything - including green Maribou for the loop and a feather from one of my Welsummer chickens!

Think it shows

Will have another go when I've sourced the right materials

PS

An after thought, as those wings are supposed to be opening, perhaps a bit of green pen to get them looking more related to the rest of the abomination? ... or just wait till I've got some CDC?

Splash - a simple looking fly and not that easy to tie. I've caught fish on my versions, but they still look bit of a mess.

Still only three months in for me, don't tie all that often so I'm just pleased to get it somewhere near to kick off with.

I like this fly though and just have a feeling it will be perfect for my spot so I'll be focussing on this one for a week or two.

The snow that was booked for tonight has not shown up so better get some zzz,s as school run beckons.
