Default Can anyone name the fly

Some 30+ years ago I watched an old guy fishing the river near me and he had two 10lb+ salmon and a sea trout that I'd say was bigger on the bank, being the nosey git I am I asked him what fly he was using, he said, "its got no name son, but it catches fish". The fly had a red tail, pale pink body, black throat and a blue mallard wing feather as a wing, I made a few but never caught anything with it, I found it the other day and thought I might ask the question, I had an inkling that it might be a variation on a Butcher.
Any suggestions?

Not a pattern I know, perhaps a pattern of his own?

Maybe it was a butcher and you were looking through rose tinted glasses? Just kidding but it very much sounds like a butcher with a tarnished tinsel body. Older flies were tied with metal tinsel that was very prone to tarnishing if it wasn't varnished. Hope this helps.

But surely the old guy would have known, and said if it was a Butcher? I think it's obvious that it was one of his own ties.....

Gotta agree with you Scratch. Maybe KD can post a few pics and we can debate some more?
