Default Varivas WB (wave barbless) hooks

Hi

I've noticed alot of patterns are being tied on varivas wave barbless hooks in the magazines and articles on the web. Now to me a downward facing point is a recipie for disaster or is it? I'd have thought a slightly upturned point like tmc 103bl, partridge sld, knapek hooks would be the best holding approach.

The long and short of it is are these hooks any good for holding fish with the wave bump and downward point?

I'm also interested on others opinions on these hooks as I am thinking of getting them in sizes 20 & 22 to tie small nymphs with 1.5 Tungsten Beads.

They are lovely hooks and I recommend them highly:

If you take a look, the point is virtually parallel with the shank, but is off-set from the bend - therefore it appears more downwards than it really is. This shape helps with hook hold. I have found there is no problem with the hook up with this point.

Well made, very sharp hooks IMO.

Cheers,

Hi Dave it was a combination of your river fly box and recent articles by paul proctor in t&s that got me thinking about it. They make lovely nymphs and bead head patterns and like BERT was thinking have a great size range for small sizes and micro tungsten beads.

I only fish barbless and have been looking for a barbless nymph hook instead of de barbing b160's and b170's. I'm in the mindset that a specifically designed barbless hook will hold better than a de barbed barbed designed hook.

Hi Jonathan.......I agree with your logic and have endeavoured to find 'that' hook. After several years of trying I have to say that I'm still searching. I have to say that a debarbed hook certainly 'holds its own' - although I haven't yet tried these varivas

Hey Dave........can't believe that you have to think about such an honour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi bugsy

At the minute b160's are not a bad de barbed bet as they have nice wide gape and short shank which suits bead patterns but they have a very short point.

I do think its worth giving the varivas a wetting next season tho something different to try!
